Summary

I love historical fiction when it makes me google to learn what events are real and what are fiction- this is the best way to continue learning in my opinion。 I did not know about the evacuation of children in London during WW2 and as a mother it horrified me knowing families were separated this way。 I can’t imagine being in that position and not staying with my children。 I also love the author’s writing style how she weaves history into a modern day story, and always ties it all up in the end w I love historical fiction when it makes me google to learn what events are real and what are fiction- this is the best way to continue learning in my opinion。 I did not know about the evacuation of children in London during WW2 and as a mother it horrified me knowing families were separated this way。 I can’t imagine being in that position and not staying with my children。 I also love the author’s writing style how she weaves history into a modern day story, and always ties it all up in the end with a profound lesson。 。。。more

Sappy but interesting This book is filled with wonderful historical facts, but thin on plot。 Everything turns out just the way you predict Happily ever after。

Tedious。 Author did not trust the reader to put pieces together。

Meissner is ameizning! See what I did there?! Loved it。 Emmeline/Isabel is an intriguing character。 I knew who she was from the outset but how she got there was a hard, interesting journey。 I loved how she learned to understand her mother。

3+ stars! I always enjoy historical fiction, and this was no exception。

It took me a couple of weeks to read this book。 It didn't really hold my interest。 Perhaps, it was too unbelievable。 I didn't like reading all of the letters to Emmy from Julia - too detailed and very childlike。 It took me a couple of weeks to read this book。 It didn't really hold my interest。 Perhaps, it was too unbelievable。 I didn't like reading all of the letters to Emmy from Julia - too detailed and very childlike。 。。。more

As I was reading, I anticipated rating this historical novel a 4 but my reaction to the latter part of the story added a 5th star。 The story offers characters of depth with their flaws, guilt, choices and bravery。 Learning more about the London Blitz and the impact of the evacuation of children to foster families in the countryside added to the texture of the plot。 My second novel read from this author。 I’ll definitely read the others。

Recommended by a friend as one of her top reads。 It did not disappoint even when I had high expectations。 Had to finish the last half all in one sitting。

This starts off with Kendra interviewing Isabel , a London Blitz survivor who's 93 at the moment and this is the first time she's going to talk about her experience。 Reading this was harder than I thought it would be。 This story is so beautifully and painfully narrated that I feel like I'm out of tears now。 My heart could just not bare the sorrow of this book。 This was no less horrifying than an actual horror movie where instead of ghosts there were real life humans haunting you into despair, pa This starts off with Kendra interviewing Isabel , a London Blitz survivor who's 93 at the moment and this is the first time she's going to talk about her experience。 Reading this was harder than I thought it would be。 This story is so beautifully and painfully narrated that I feel like I'm out of tears now。 My heart could just not bare the sorrow of this book。 This was no less horrifying than an actual horror movie where instead of ghosts there were real life humans haunting you into despair, pain and madness。 There were parts that made me feel utterly hopeless and pathetic, and more so because I realized though this is fiction, chances are this must have been real for so many people。 Fav quote :- The rest of the world may zoom past at breakneck speed, but when you are learning to live with loss , time slows to a pace of your breathing。 。。。more

Good story of two sisters who were separated during the bombing of London during World War 2。

Choices and consequences all mingled in the devastation of war and complications of relationships。 The bombing of England and London children sent to the country to avoid harm became real。

Audible。 4。5I really enjoyed this story。 Although set in the time of the air raids of England, this story could have happened under any tragic circumstance: Border crossings, hurricanes or even mountain hiking。 The depiction of the war, the ongoing bombings and the overall tragedy of separation gives a vivid impression of the hardships of families having to scramble to find safety for their children。 The relationships were heart felt and the story moved along easily。 The sisters relationship was Audible。 4。5I really enjoyed this story。 Although set in the time of the air raids of England, this story could have happened under any tragic circumstance: Border crossings, hurricanes or even mountain hiking。 The depiction of the war, the ongoing bombings and the overall tragedy of separation gives a vivid impression of the hardships of families having to scramble to find safety for their children。 The relationships were heart felt and the story moved along easily。 The sisters relationship was endearing。I was compelled to read without taking a break。。 poor family。 LOL。 I really enjoyed the narration and the ending。 This is the first I’ve read from this author。 Not the last。Great quote:If I know anything about time, it is that it stretches to walk when the rest of the world may zoom past at break neck speeds。 But when you are learning to live with loss, time slows to the pace of your grieving。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 I like books that mix history with current stories and author Susan Meissner did a marvelous job with this book。 I did not know much about the London Blitz or the children of London that were displaced to the country during this time。 This part of the story helped me to see how horrific it must have been for both parents and children during this time。Secrets of a Charmed Life is primarily told from the viewpoint of a girl who was 15 when the Germans bombed London and I really enjoyed this book。 I like books that mix history with current stories and author Susan Meissner did a marvelous job with this book。 I did not know much about the London Blitz or the children of London that were displaced to the country during this time。 This part of the story helped me to see how horrific it must have been for both parents and children during this time。Secrets of a Charmed Life is primarily told from the viewpoint of a girl who was 15 when the Germans bombed London and her story of tragedy, forgiveness and reconciliation over the course of her entire life。 Written around a box of wedding dress sketches and the dream of Emmy Downtree to become a wedding dress designer, the story takes many twists and turns leaving the reader breathless in many cases and aching for Emmy。 At the end of the story, tears streamed down my face as Susan Meissner does the unimaginable to reconcile the unfortunate and hurtful choices that Emmy makes during her life。 Secrets of a Charmed Life is one we can all relate to in some way or other as we look back on our choices and see where they have taken us。 Good and bad。 。。。more

This is a nice, entertaining and well-written piece of historical fiction, set mainly during World War II。 The story of two sisters evacuated from London who run away from their foster home in the countryside and return to London at the start of the Blitz。 They are separated in the chaos and the older one spends years trying to find out what happened to her younger sister。 The description of the terror and trauma of the nearly daily bombing of London is vivid and well-researched as is everything This is a nice, entertaining and well-written piece of historical fiction, set mainly during World War II。 The story of two sisters evacuated from London who run away from their foster home in the countryside and return to London at the start of the Blitz。 They are separated in the chaos and the older one spends years trying to find out what happened to her younger sister。 The description of the terror and trauma of the nearly daily bombing of London is vivid and well-researched as is everything else in the book。 The second novel I have read by Susan Meissner - I’m sure I will read more。 。。。more

I found the subject matter of the story to be interesting, children being evacuated prior to London being bombed。 I don’t like how the author told the story。 I would have rather it been told in a way that made me feel like I was living through it。 Instead I felt annoyed at the actions of the main character and at the way the story is told。 It could have been so much better。

4。5What a charming, serendipitous book that made me want to laugh, cry, as well as chuck the book across the room! This is a story about two sisters and their journey during WWII, specifically focusing on the September 7th blitz in London。 (And subsequent bombings after)。 I won’t give anything away, but it talks about their journey after the blitz and struggles they had to endure。 Beautifully written story。

I love this book! Characters very real。 The story is heartbreaking。 I’m glad Emmy and Julia had their time together in God’s time。 Look forward to reading more books by Susan Meissner—a very talented story teller。

Fabulous novel about England in the 1940s。 Emily and her sister Julia are evacuated to the country to be safe。 But Emily feels the need to return, he sister tags along。 Little did they know it was the first night of the German bombings。 Emmy goes to her appointment leaving Julia alone in their flat。 No one knows where their mother is。 Current day: Kendra interviews Isabel MacFarland on her 93rd birthday。 Isabel knows the story。 If I said more there would be spoilers。 This novel does not disappoi Fabulous novel about England in the 1940s。 Emily and her sister Julia are evacuated to the country to be safe。 But Emily feels the need to return, he sister tags along。 Little did they know it was the first night of the German bombings。 Emmy goes to her appointment leaving Julia alone in their flat。 No one knows where their mother is。 Current day: Kendra interviews Isabel MacFarland on her 93rd birthday。 Isabel knows the story。 If I said more there would be spoilers。 This novel does not disappoint。 Have tissues at the end。 。。。more

Heartbreaking throughout the whole book。 This author always tells such a good story! It made me realize how little I know about the Blitz。 A truly incredible read。

When I read good books there are usually moments or quotes that stick with me。。。this was one of those quotes from “Secrets of a Charmed Life”:“Ah, but what is history? Is it a record of what happened or rather our interpretation of what happened?” “I think it’s both,” I answer。 “It has to be both。 What good is remembering an event if you don’t remember how it made you feel。 How it impacted others。 How it made them feel。 You would learn nothing and neither would anyone else。”That is why I love hi When I read good books there are usually moments or quotes that stick with me。。。this was one of those quotes from “Secrets of a Charmed Life”:“Ah, but what is history? I was pulling for each of the characters and was not disappointed。 The mystery of each during the war and beyond was mesmerizing。 I felt as if I were I n the middle of London with the characters with bombs dropping。
